Why you need a Google Business Profile listing
When people search for you on Google, what do they see? Your free Maps profile with phone, hours, reviews, and directions in one tap.

Do you run a store, office, or local service? Almost everyone starts on their phone: “near me,” “in Athens,” “open now.” If you are not showing up there, the customer goes to the next business.
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your free business card on Google and Maps. It does not replace your website, but it is often the first thing someone sees before they call or visit.
What customers see
With a complete listing, they get:
- Name, address, phone number
- Hours and whether you are open right now
- Buttons for call, directions, and website
- Photos and reviews from other customers
All on one screen. No digging through outdated sites or wrong phone numbers online.
Why it matters
On the map. When people search “near me,” Google shows businesses with an active profile. Without a listing, you often do not exist at all.
In reviews. Ratings and comments work like a recommendation from someone they know. Positive reviews help. When you reply (including to negative ones, in a constructive tone), you show you care.
In local top results. Search results often show the map pack with three businesses. Your profile is the essential first step to get there. It is not magic, but without it you never start.
Free, around the clock. Listing costs nothing. Google also gives you simple stats: how many people found you, requested directions, or called.
What often goes wrong
- Empty or half-finished profile (no photos, no category)
- Wrong phone number or hours
- Duplicate listings for the same business
- Reviews with no reply
Small details, but you lose calls every day.
Where to start
Go to Google Business Profile, claim or create your business, and fill in the basics carefully. If you want to do it right from the start, read our guide on Local SEO or how Google Business Profile becomes a new-customer engine.
Listing is the first step. Maintenance (photos, posts, reviews, accurate info) is what keeps you ahead.
