ChatGPT Ads in Greece? What changes for businesses in 2026
ChatGPT ads reached Europe and Greece. What they are, how they differ from GEO, who sees ads, and what a business should do today before self-service Ads Manager opens.

For years, whenever someone asked “when will ads come to ChatGPT?”, the answer was “not yet.” That changed.
OpenAI started a US pilot in February 2026, expanded to other markets, and from August 24, 2026 activated the European rollout. Greece is included. Greek Free and Go users can already see sponsored results inside ChatGPT.
For businesses, this means something simple but important: ChatGPT is no longer only about GEO and organic visibility. It is also a paid media channel.
What ChatGPT Ads are
We are not talking about banners or pop-ups. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s normal answer, in a separate sponsored block, when the user’s question shows commercial intent.
The user no longer writes:
hotel santorini
They write:
I want a private catamaran in Santorini for 4 people, sunset cruise, not too touristy, budget up to 800 euros.
ChatGPT understands context, constraints, and budget. That is where a sponsored placement that matches the intent can appear.
OpenAI is clear that paid advertising does not buy placement inside the answer itself. The organic answer stays separate. That distinction matters because it creates two parallel worlds:
| Organic AI visibility | Paid AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | ChatGPT mentions you in the answer | Sponsored block below the answer |
| How you get it | GEO, content, citations, brand mentions | ChatGPT Ads, budget, targeting |
| Who controls it | Content quality and trust | You + bidding + conversion data |
| Parallel | SEO | Google Ads |
If you are first on Google but invisible in ChatGPT, ChatGPT Ads do not fix the core problem. They complement it.

From ad to purchase inside the chat
The next step is not just a sponsored link. It is agentic commerce.
With Instant Checkout, a user can request a product, see an offer, confirm purchase, and receive order confirmation without leaving ChatGPT. OpenAI has already announced partnerships with Etsy, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Instacart, and others.

For e-commerce brands, the funnel compresses:
- Question
- Offer
- Purchase
- Confirmation
Without Google, without a landing page, without a remarketing pixel in the classic sense. Inventory is no longer only “who sees an ad.” It is “who can buy inside the AI interface.”
What applies in Greece today
Two different topics often get mixed up:
1. When do Greek users see ads?
From August 24, 2026, as part of the European rollout. Greece is among 31 markets (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland).
2. When can a Greek business run campaigns on its own?
Not yet with full self-service. In Europe, OpenAI starts through OpenAI Ads Solutions, agency partners, and technology partners. Self-service Ads Manager for European businesses is expected later in the quarter.
So Greece is already an inventory market (users see ads), but not yet a fully self-service advertiser market.
Who sees ads
| Plan | Sees ads? |
|---|---|
| Free | Yes |
| Go | Yes |
| Plus | No |
| Pro | No |
| Business | No |
| Enterprise | No |
| Edu | No |
Ads also do not show on accounts under 18.
For advertiser planning, this means a significant share of professionals who use ChatGPT daily is not available as ad inventory.
Targeting and measurement today
ChatGPT Ads is not an experimental banner network. OpenAI already offers:
- Geo targeting (market selection)
- Custom audiences
- Conversion optimization
- OpenAI Pixel
- Conversions API
- Third-party measurement integrations
Bidding models have already moved from CPM to CPC and conversion optimization. For agency workflows, the model now resembles classic performance marketing:
ChatGPT Ads → Website → OpenAI Pixel → Conversion
Like:
Google Ads → GTM → Conversion
Meta Ads → Pixel / CAPI → Conversion
Example for a Greek business
Imagine a client with a catamaran in Santorini.
The user asks:
What is the best private catamaran cruise in Santorini for a family with children?
ChatGPT answers organically. Below, a sponsored placement may appear:
Private Santorini Catamaran Cruise
with landing page, price, availability, and CTA.
The user clicks, visits the site, books. The OpenAI Pixel records the conversion. The campaign optimizes toward people with similar behavior.
It feels like Google Search Ads. With one critical difference: the user has already explained what they want, why, who they travel with, and what budget they have. That is deeper intent than a keyword.
Can it replace Google?
Not immediately.
Google has huge search volume, decades of data, mature bidding, Merchant Center, Maps, YouTube, and a full ecosystem.
ChatGPT starts from a different advantage: it knows the context of the decision before the user clicks anything.
| Google Search | ChatGPT |
|---|---|
| ”best hotel santorini" | "Boutique hotel in Santorini for anniversary, private pool, not Oia, 4 nights September, budget around 1,500 euros” |
| Keyword intent | Conversational intent |
| Mature auction | New, growing inventory |
For Greek businesses in tourism, hospitality, professional services, and e-commerce, ChatGPT Ads does not replace Google Ads. It complements conversational queries where the user has already explained their need.
GEO + ChatGPT Ads: the new service every agency needs
When a client asks “how do I rank first in ChatGPT?”, the right answer is not one thing.
It is two:
- GEO / AEO for organic visibility in answers
- ChatGPT Ads for paid visibility next to answers
That creates a new service category: AI Search Marketing, combining:
- SEO
- GEO
- AEO
- ChatGPT Ads
- Gemini visibility
- AI citation tracking
- AI reputation management
At IT DEV we already handle the organic side with AI Visibility packages. The paid side with ChatGPT Ads is a natural extension, not a separate trend.
What to do now, before it goes mainstream
1. Do not wait
Inventory in Greece is already live. Early advertisers get lower competition and more learning data.
2. Pick 2–3 clients for a pilot
Ideally:
- Tourism / hospitality
- Professional services with high-intent queries
- E-commerce with a clear conversion event
3. Set up conversions properly
Booking, inquiry form, phone call, WhatsApp click. If you do not measure conversion, you do not have a performance channel. You have an impression channel.
4. Keep doing GEO in parallel
There is little point buying AI ads while ChatGPT organically does not even know who you are. Paid amplifies. It does not replace brand authority.
5. Prepare landing pages for conversational intent
Users arrive with specific context. A generic homepage is not enough. You need pages that answer “for whom, what budget, what is included, why you.”

Conclusion
From August 24, 2026, ChatGPT in Greece is no longer only an AI search surface. It is also an advertising surface.
Businesses that win will not be those that “wait for the market to stabilize.” They will be those that build both organic AI visibility and paid AI readiness now.
SEO is not dead. Google Ads is not disappearing. But a third axis was added: be visible where people now ask, decide, and soon buy.
